Foundations, researchers have one goal: cure cancer

Some 70 researchers from seven countries will meet Friday and Saturday at the first DIPG.org Pediatric Brain Cancer Symposium.

Their ultimate goal is to stop a killer - a deadly brainstem tumor called diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma - in its tracks, said Keith Desserich of Wyoming, the co-founder of The Cure Starts Now Foundation, and an organizer of the symposium.
They're taking a unique route to their destination: Most of the presentations will focus on new discoveries relating to brain tumor treatments, but many of the researchers aren't brain cancer specialists.
Organizers hope the mix of specialists will be able to identify new ideas and strategies for successfully treating the tumor, a diagnosis with an outlook the National Cancer Institute calls "dismal."
Only about 20 percent of children who develop the tumor are still alive two years after their diagnosis; median survival time is about nine months.
"It's the type of cancer that we fear the most, but it's also probably the one that holds the most promise as far as research progress," said Desserich, whose daughter, Elena, died of the tumor in 2007. "It holds the most promise for that home-run strategy."
