Dragon to enthrall Delhi with magical stunts
Yuan Ran stands barely five feet tall in her red, suede Mary Jane shoes. Nothing about her petite frame suggests athletic capability, but once on the stage she can effortlessly balance a woman on the balls of her upraised feet. Founded in 1956, the troupe from China’s southwestern Yunnan province is a mix of performers ranging from dancers to magicians, all of whose talents will be on display at Tuesday’s show. Beginning with a welcome lion dance, the troupe will perform various other feats, such as foot juggling , quintet contortion, hula hooping, and rotating hoop diving, to enact traditional Chinese stories.
Magician Qiy Uan Rui is also 23 but has been performing for 15 years. “My father and grandfather were both magicians and I learnt the craft from them. I still need to make sure I practise daily and work on my speed, agility, and reflexes,” he says. The high point of his Tuesday’s performance will be a trick he took six years to perfect - converting 14 ping-pong balls into large plastic flowers.
Qiy Uan Rui’s acts do not require great bodily strength, yet he sets aside a few hours every day for the gym, “to look his best on stage” . Looking good is also a priority for the women acrobats . “I have to watch my weight because I need to look small, beautiful, and graceful on stage. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and try to control my diet,” says Yuan Ran. But one thing the men don’t compromise on is their fitness. It’s a tough, rigorous life, do they look forward to the day when they can hang up their boots? Never, says Yuan Ran, “This is my life” .
